The ultimate miniature condenser microphone for drums and percussions. Its cardioid polar pattern rejects overspill from nearby instruments. A continuously adjustable vise-type clamp makes it easy to fix the microphone securely on the top hoop of most drums or percussion instruments. An external shock mount provides high mechanical-noise rejection. A special snap-on stabilizer knee will keep the gooseneck bent at a defined angle. The C 518 M features an integrated, switchable bass cut for adjusting the microphone’s frequency response to your instrument’s sound.

The unique adapter plate A 400 allows easy attachment of the AKG pocket transmitters.

The C 519 clips onto the bell of a trumpet, saxophone, trombone, tuba, or any other wind instrument (e.g. didgeridoo). Room to move for the wind section at last! Its tight cardioid polar pattern makes the C 519 an ideal tool for use near monitor wedges, and its flat frequency response delivers a natural, powerful, and clear sound.

D11 - Bass Instruments

Quality instrument microphones are premium at best, never affordable ones. However, the akg d11 encompasses both those terms in a rugged all metal microphone. Specifically designed for bass instruments such as kick drums, bass guitar amplifiers and even a trombone the d11 delivers powerful sound with a high energy low end. Giving a powerful sound with gutsy bass range this mic handles highest sound pressure levels with ease, making it perfect for akg's suggested purposes. Supplied with a 5m xlr cable and hard plastic carry case, you'll be hard pushed to find a better bass mic anywhere near this price.

D22 - Bass Instruments

S AK273

AKG

The D22's technical specification is as simple as the mic itself, which has no switches or pads to complicate things. Its frequency range extends from 60Hz to 18kHz, while sensitivity is 2.5mV/Pa, but no frequency curve is provided in the brief manual and there's no clue as to how many dBs 'down' the mic is at the specified limits. Clearly, this is one microphone that will have to be evaluated almost entirely subjectively.

While the D22 is laudably compact, plugging in a standard XLR cable effectively doubles its length, as I mentioned above. While I wouldn't want the designers to use a non–standard connector or a fixed cable, I still can't see why mics of this type can't be designed with their XLR socket at an angle, to keep the cable connector below the line of fire when the mic is fixed to a drum rim and angled down towards the head. Having said that, even though the D22 is an inexpensive mic, it is very nicely engineered, with a heavy cast body and a very tough single–layer basket lined with acoustic foam — so it should safely withstand a few whacks! As you'd expect, the capsule is internally shock–mounted, although when I removed the basket to investigate I found the resilient mounting stiffer than I'd expected. The swivel mechanism has a fairly small thumbscrew, for tightening purposes, but the mic showed no tendency to droop in normal operation.

D112 - Bass Instruments

The D 112 has earned a well-deserved reputation worldwide as the best kick drum microphone ever made. Heavy-footed drummers won’t faze it, because the D 112 handles up to 160 dB SPL with no audible distortion.

A specially engineered diaphragm with a very low resonance frequency maintains solid and powerful response below 100 Hz, while a narrow band presence rise at 4 kHz punches through dense mixes with little or no added EQ.

The result is a kick drum sound that ideally balances precise definition and forceful impact. The D 112 is also an excellent choice for use with bass cabinets, trombones, etc.

D550

The D 550 is a unidirectional dynamic microphone. It has been designed primarily for tough onstage use on bass instruments including kick drum, tuba, trombone, bass amps, etc. and uses a patented AKG Varimotion diaphragm. The wide frequency response of this microphone slightly emphasizes the mid and high frequencies to ensure a powerful sound. The D 550 has a cardioid polar response. This means the microphone is most sensitive to sound arriving from in front of it, less sensitive to sound arriving from the sides, and hardly responds to sound from the rear. This pickup pattern is virtually the same for all frequencies ("frequency independent"). The strong plastic housing and the wire-mesh outer grille of the D 550 protect the transducer system from damage.
